ABOUT THE PLACE

St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Church

St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Church is one of Yambol's most recognisable architectural landmarks and the largest Orthodox church in the city. Located in the city centre, it stands out for its monumental architecture, distinctive domes and richly decorated interior.

The church's history began shortly after the Liberation of Yambol in 1878, when Russian soldiers built a military chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The chapel was consecrated on 6 August that year. For a period, it was the city's only functioning Christian place of worship, as the older churches of St. George and the Holy Trinity had been severely damaged during the war.

Towards the end of the 19th century, construction of a larger church began on the same site. The foundation stone was laid on 19 June 1894, and religious services in the new building began in 1899.

Between 1923 and 1926, the church underwent major architectural alterations. Two side towers with bell towers and the central dome were added, creating its distinctive appearance. The church was completed and solemnly consecrated on 28 November 1926.

Today, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker remains an active Orthodox church and an important part of Yambol's spiritual and cultural life. Its architecture, frescoes and icons make it a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the city.

St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Church is located in central Yambol and can easily be included in a walking tour of the city's historical landmarks.

During your visit, take a moment to admire the impressive central dome, the two side towers and the richly decorated interior. The icons, iconostasis and frescoes are among the church's most interesting features.

As the church is an active place of worship, visitors are asked to remain quiet during services, dress respectfully and follow any restrictions on photography inside the building.
